šŸ’™ Ikigai- ā€œikiā€ meaning ā€œto live,ā€ and ā€œgaiā€ meaning ā€œreason,ā€ which translates to ā€œa reason to live.ā€

Life has a way of making us so caught up in the pursuit of ā€œwhat we have to do to get byā€ or ā€œwhat we have to do to surviveā€, that we neglect what it is we WANT to do in this life.

Over the past week, I had a chance to read ā€œIkigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Lifeā€, written by Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia. The purpose of this book was to guide the reader through Japanese beliefs, the main one being that "everyone has an ikigai - a reason for living.ā€

Having a strong sense of ikigai—where…what you love, what you’re good at, what you can get paid for, and what the world needs all overlap.

Our ikigai is the reason we get up in the morning, and the reason most Japanese people never really retire (there’s no word in Japanese that means ā€œretireā€ in the sense it does in English). They remain active and work at what they enjoy, because they’ve found a real purpose in life—the happiness of always being busy.

The authors of this book interviewed residents of the Japanese village with the highest percentage of 100-year-olds. The villagers explained the secrets to their longevity and how they found their Ikigai, which brings them happiness and makes them look forward to getting out of bed every single day, even in their old age.

Before starting week 2, look at the goals you set for 2024. Think to yourself, ā€œDo I know my ikigai? Do I know what brings me happiness and makes me excited to get out of bed every single day?ā€

If you find yourself confused and don’t know the answers to these questions, use the chart above. Answer each circle to discover your ikigai.

šŸ’— Before launching into the week, take a moment, and tell yourself you’re proud of yourself for taking the time to better yourself. It takes a lot of courage to realize you want to become better for YOU, and it takes a certain amount of love to put in the work to DO better, for yourself.

🄭 The 3 main things you will achieve by the end of the week are…

  1. Being a part of the BGF family, a community where like-minded women support each other to become the best versions of ourselves this month

  2. Finding your Ikigai and figuring out how your 2024 goals align with it

  3. Creating a schedule at the beginning of the week on Google Calendar to make sure you’re being 100% realistic with yourself about the time you have, so you can work on your goals + make time for yourself (remember we’re not robots, it’s essential to make the time for yourself to recuperate)

Week 2 Challenges- July 8-14

šŸ‘Ÿ Move:

  • 20 minutes of movement daily + listen to a podcast of your choice during that workout

  • 5 minutes of stretching either in the morning or evening to relax your body

✨ Mind:

  • 1st Priority: Answer the circles in the Ikigai section and write it down on paper. Put the paper somewhere you can see it every day.

  • 2nd Priority: Use Google Calendar to schedule your commitments such as work, school, sleep, exercise, etc. This will help you visualize how much time you have to dedicate to working at your goals everyday. Aim to schedule at least 30 min each day to make progress towards your 2024 goals.

  • 3rd Priority: If you haven’t done so from last week, use Google or Pinterest to find photos that align with your 2024 goals (not just for aesthetics) and create a digital or physical vision board (you can use Canva, Google Slides, Microsoft PPT to make one for free)

  • Daily priority: 5 minutes of journaling every morning to set your intentions for the day, and 2 big goals for the day you want to get done can be anything like working out, meal prepping, etc. 5-10 min evening journaling as well to reflect on your day and see what you accomplished or didn’t accomplish.

    • Morning journal prompts: How do I want to feel today? 3 things I am grateful for today? What is one goal I want to accomplish today? What steps am I going to take to achieve those goals? 3 affirmations?

    • Evening journal prompts: How am I? Did I accomplish my goal for today, if so how did it make me feel? If I didn’t, what can I do differently tomorrow to accomplish it? 3 things I am grateful for today? 1 lesson I learned from today? How can I make tomorrow a good day?

šŸ§˜šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø Rest:

  • Daily priority: 7-8 hours of sleep every night

  • Skincare: Take 1 night this week to relax and do a face mask or oil your hair, watch your favorite show/movie, or read a book of your choice when doing so. Take this time to just be off your phone and in the moment with what you’re doing.

šŸ’™ Social:

  • Make time for meaningful activities with loved ones at least 1x this week. It could be as simple as a phone call or face time!

  • Take some time to declutter your work area + clean your living space…maybe listen to your favorite music or podcast while doing so to make it enjoyable, if you don’t enjoy cleaning :)
